Back to School

ILS Families and Friends,

As many of you may know, the CDC recently released guidance for schools for the new academic year that stated that those who have been vaccinated need not wear a mask during the school day while those who have not been vaccinated are recommended to still wear a facemask. The Illinois State Board of Education further clarified with the following statement: “The CDC continues to recommend masking and physical distancing as key prevention strategies. However, if school administrators decide to remove any of the prevention strategies for their school based on local conditions, they should remove them one at a time and monitor closely for any increases in COVID-19 cases. Schools should communicate their strategies and any changes in plans to teachers, staff and families, and directly to older students, using accessible materials and communication channels, in a language and at a literacy level that teachers, staff, students, and families understand.”

With this clarification, the administration at ILS recognizes that current local conditions are very favorable for adopting a mask-optional policy to begin the 2021-2022 school year. Right now the current positivity rate in the Crete area is around 1%. Furthermore, Will County’s current status of eligible vaccinated individuals is above 60% with adults 18 years old and over at over 70%. These statistics among many other facts that we now know about COVID-19 and its variants give us confidence in moving forward with this approach. We certainly do encourage any families or students who feel the need to wear a facemask to continue to do so. If you would like to make sure your child is wearing a face covering during the school day, please contact your child’s teacher or school administration.

In line with the CDC and the IDPH’s guidance, we will still continue to socially distance whenever possible at a measure of three feet. Emphasis on handwashing and other good hygiene practices will continue as well as concentrated sanitizing procedures by our janitorial staff. It is also important to recognize that we must follow quarantine procedures for unvaccinated individuals. Those who are not vaccinated will need to quarantine for at least 10 days if exposed while those who have been vaccinated will not have the same restriction per current guidance.

Finally, it is also important to recognize that we are offering this guidance a month in advance of the start of the school year and that circumstances may change at any time. Local or state health departments may mandate procedures that could affect this approach. Their decision or changes in local conditions could lead to us having different policies for vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals. Additional concerns could also lead to vaccinated faculty and students needing to follow additional safety mitigations.

All of us at ILS recognize the complexity of this issue and the broad, wide-ranging opinions that our families have. We are committed to maintaining a school environment that is as safe as possible for everyone while balancing spiritual, emotional, physical, psychological, and academic needs to return to normalcy. As always, please feel free to relay any questions or concerns you may have to us. Please contact me directly at the school office or via email (dvance@ilhs.org) to discuss these matters at any time.

Have a great week!

In Christ,
